In our complex world, mental health issues often underlie some of the behavioral challenges observed in children. Educators believe that one of their chief roles is to "bring children out into the world" but when a child is hospitalized, this opportunity is lost. It then becomes the task of insightful therapeutic staff to "bring the world inside, to the children". This is a story about hope and healing... and how the vulnerability of a tiny creature elicited empathy and ultimately created a cohesive community of care.
Marissa Happ is an educator, therapist and writer. Since 2000, Marissa has had the opportunity to use clinical skills within a variety of health care environments, working with children, adolescents, adults and families in early intervention, public health, pediatric medical clinics, infant mental health initiatives and psychiatric hospital social work.

This story was the culmination of a nine-month therapeutic classroom project which allowed hospitalized children the opportunity to experience the healing capacity of nature.
